A century of bus transportation in Freiburg marked by a commemorative celebration
Freiburg, Germany, is set to commemorate a significant milestone in its public transportation history. On September 27 and 28, the centenary celebration of Freiburg's bus line will take place at the historic Süd depot. This event, organised by the Kultur- und Geschichte Kreis Betzenhausen-Bischofslinde e.V., the Friends of the Freiburg Tramway e.V., and the Freiburg Transportation Authority (VAG), will be a celebration of the city's commitment to sustainable transportation.
The first bus line in Freiburg began operation on September 27, 1925, from Hohenzollernplatz to Betzenhausen. Initially, two white-and-red painted buses with 60 horsepower ran every 20 minutes. Fast forward a century, and the bus service in Freiburg has come a long way. As of now, approximately 80 buses serve 20 lines in the city.
One of the most notable developments in Freiburg's bus service is the shift towards electric buses. Two-thirds of the buses serving Freiburg are already electric, saving around 55 tons of CO2 annually each. This transition not only reduces the city's carbon footprint but also contributes to a cleaner and healthier environment for its residents.
The VAG aims to operate completely climate-neutrally by 2030, a testament to the city's commitment to sustainability. During the festival, visitors can learn more about the history of Freiburg's bus service and its future goals.
The festival will feature historic vehicles, guided tours, and an exhibition on the history of Freiburg's bus service. Admission to the event is free, and it will run from 10 am to 6 pm.
This celebration is not just a look back at the past, but also a glimpse into the future of Freiburg's public transportation. As the city continues to strive for climate neutrality, the centenary celebration of its bus line serves as a reminder of the progress made and the challenges that lie ahead.
Visitors are encouraged to join in the celebrations and experience the rich history and promising future of Freiburg's public transportation. The festival is a unique opportunity to learn, engage, and be a part of the city's commitment to a sustainable future.
