A59's Critical 12km Stretch Urgently Needs Repair
A critical section of the A59, stretching 12 kilometers between Monheim and Langenfeld, is in dire need of renovation. The concrete slabs, dating back to the mid-1970s, have sustained numerous damages, with new ones continually occurring. Autobahn GmbH Rhineland has been working on the road since October 2024, with a full renovation set to begin in 2026.
The damaged stretch, which includes the section between the Düsseldorf-Süd interchange and Monheim-Süd, has led to a reduced speed limit of 80 km/h in the direction of Düsseldorf. This measure, implemented on October 15, 2025, aims to slow damage progression and enhance safety. Broken slabs are promptly replaced during brief full closures to minimize disruption.
The renovation project, initially scheduled to start in 2025, was extended by over a week due to more severe damages than anticipated. The section was reopened on November 4, but restrictions remain in place. The complete renovation is set to commence in the course of 2026, once construction on detour routes, particularly the A3, is completed.
Autobahn GmbH Rhineland continues to monitor the A59's condition closely, implementing short-term measures as needed until the full renovation begins. Motorists are advised to adhere to the speed limit and follow any updates on the project's progress.
