In a bid to bolster clean mobility and enhance the competitiveness of the German automotive industry, the Federal Association for New Mobility (BBNM) has urged the federal government to establish expert working groups for digital initiatives and charging infrastructure. Despite the BBNM not providing specifics on the structure or operation of these groups, the call for action is driven by the importance of these issues for the environment, citizens, and the industry.

Several organizations and consortia are already actively involved in the development and coordination of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and digital initiatives in Germany. Notably, the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport recently awarded a €400 million contract to a consortium of energy, automotive, and infrastructure companies—known as “Deutschlandnetz for heavy trucks”—to build a nationwide fast-charging network for heavy-duty electric trucks. This group is responsible for deploying at least 130 grid-connected charging sites along key transport corridors by 2026, with a focus on ultra-high-capacity megawatt charging systems (MCS) for trucks.

DEKRA, a certification and testing organization, plays a crucial role in ensuring compliance with current standards and safety in the planning, system selection, and certification of charging infrastructure. Major automakers, charger manufacturers, and charge-point operators collaborate with grid operators and regulators to accelerate charging infrastructure deployment and integrate digital solutions for better grid management and user experience. European organizations like ChargeUpEurope monitor and report on infrastructure developments and provide recommendations for advancing the European charging network, influencing policy and investment priorities in Germany.

The German Federal Government has taken concrete steps to accelerate the deployment of EV charging infrastructure and foster digitalization in the sector. The government has committed €400 million to establish a nationwide network of fast-charging sites for electric trucks, ensuring these are open to all users regardless of truck brand or fleet provider. Charging locations are selected based on logistics data, freight patterns, and traffic flow analysis to maximize utility and coverage along critical transport routes. The government is also prioritizing the deployment of MCS technology, essential for long-haul electric trucks, and promoting open access and interoperability to prevent vendor lock-in and promote competition.

According to Thomas Mertens, a board member of BBNM, what is urgently needed is the power supply for the last mile. The greatest demand for charging infrastructure, according to the association, lies in company depot charging parks, charging hubs at logistics hubs, and affordable charging options in rental housing areas. As Germany continues to invest in EV charging infrastructure and digital initiatives, it positions itself as a leader in both passenger and commercial vehicle electrification, complemented by broader European initiatives and industry collaboration.

  1. To further elevate the technological advancement in the German automotive industry, expert working groups could focus on integrating digital solutions for the power supply of the last mile, considering the high demand for charging infrastructure in company depot charging parks, charging hubs at logistics hubs, and affordable options in rental housing areas.
  2. The continued growth in the clean energy and finance sectors, through investments like the €400 million contract awarded for the nationwide fast-charging network for heavy-duty electric trucks, will significantly benefit the technology sector by fostering digitalization and innovation in the German automotive industry and EV charging infrastructure.
