Albertsons opted to abandon its planned merger with Kroger, the two leading grocery-store chains in the United States, following a recent court ruling that temporarily prohibited the agreement.

"After careful consideration, we've decided to scrap the union plan. It's a hard pill to swallow," expressed Albertsons CEO, Vivek Sankaran, in a statement.
