Aldi Workers Earn More Than Their Discounted Reputation Portrays - Aldi Staff Salaries Surpass Expectations Based on Store's Budget-Friendly Reputation

If you've ever been to an Aldi store, you know they're all about keeping costs low. So, you might assume that cashiers at Aldi aren't exactly rolling in the dough. But you'd be wrong!

While it's busier at Aldi than at most other supermarkets, the pay is pretty decent. However, there's a bit of a difference between the two Aldi companies, Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd.

Aldi Nord Keeps It Typical, with a Twist

When it comes to salaries at Aldi Nord, things pretty much follow the regional collective agreements for the retail sector. Plus, they throw in what they call an "above-average Aldi allowance," based on the hours worked and employment length. The exact figure was elusive when we asked stern magazine.

One thing Aldi Nord does guarantee is a minimum hourly wage of 14 euros since June 1, 2022, which applies mainly to cashiers and shelf stockers. With a regular work week of 37.5 hours, that equates to a basic monthly salary of 2275 euros. And don't forget vacation and Christmas bonuses!

Aldi Süd Goes Harder on the Cash

In the south, things are a bit more expensive, so it makes sense that salaries are also a tad higher. At Aldi Süd, they pay a minimum of 15 euros per hour for cashiering and shelf stocking. And, depending on the task and experience, some cashiers can earn up to 19.59 euros per hour. A monthly salary for cashiers translates to around 2440 – 3180 euros with a regular 37.5-hour workweek. Aldi Süd also pays vacation and Christmas bonuses, and sometimes regional allowances too.

Sales assistants who've received additional training earn even more, averaging around 2590 euros per month (converted to a 37.5-hour work week) according to the Hans Böckler Foundation's WSI institute. Aldi Süd pays a basic monthly salary ranging from 2660 – 3460 euros, significantly more than the average.

Trainee Troubles

Those still learning the ropes make considerably less money than full-time employees. At Aldi Süd, trainees in the sales assistant program start at 1250 euros per month, then gradually go up to 1500 euros by their third year. In contrast, Aldi Nord trainees earn 1160 euros in the first year and 1430 euros in the third year.

All figures provided are gross wages, meaning taxes and social security contributions are still deducted. We're assuming full-time jobs here, but part-time work is common in retail. Half of all retail employees are women, many of whom work part-time due to childcare responsibilities. Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd both advertise many part-time positions.

Even with a 20-hour workweek, that's a starting gross wage of €1,300 per month at Aldi Süd for cashiers.

Enrichment Data:

From online research findings, it can be inferred that Aldi Süd new hires reportedly make around €15 per hour, comparable to wages at other employers[2]. For full-time cashiers working a typical 160-hour month, this hourly rate would equate to a gross monthly salary of roughly €2,400.

For part-time positions, since part-time hours are less than full-time, the monthly gross salary would be proportionally less depending on the number of hours worked (e.g., €1,200 monthly for half the hours).

Precise and up-to-date salary figures specific to Aldi Nord cashiers and comprehensive averages can't be determined from the information sourced. Checking Aldi's official career pages or German labor union agreements may provide more accurate data.

  1. In the discourse of community policies, it's evident that Aldi, a discount retailer, offers competitive salaries, especially for cashiers, with Aldi Süd paying as much as €3180 per month for a full-time position, and even part-time cashiers earning €1,200 per month.
  2. A significant aspect of Aldi's lifestyle choices for its employees involves vocational training programs. For instance, trainees in Aldi Süd's sales assistant program start at €1250 per month and can eventually earn up to €1500 by their third year, demonstrating the retailer's commitment to vocational training and employee growth, which is a critical component of general-news discussions on business and finance.
