Alliance between Renault Group, Nissan, and Mitsubishi progresses, advancing joint ventures at Ampere Douai Plant

In a historic move, the Ampere Douai Plant in France has transformed its production line to go 100% electric, marking a significant shift in the automotive industry. This change, announced in May 2023, has paved the way for a new era of collaboration between automobile giants Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Alpine.

The plant, which started producing the Renault Megane E-Tech in 2022 and the Scenic E-Tech Electric in 2024, has since expanded its portfolio to include the all-new Nissan Micra, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, and the Alpine A290, all scheduled for commercial launch in the coming years.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, set to be unveiled on September 17, will be the first full-electric SUV for Europe from Mitsubishi and the first vehicle produced by the brand in France. This model will be built on Ampere's AmpR Medium platform, showcasing the plant's flexibility and customization capabilities.

The Nissan Micra, an iconic nameplate engineered to meet European customer preferences, was unveiled in May 2023, and the Nissan Micra EV is currently being produced at the Douai plant, set for commercial launch in 2025.

The Renault R5 E-Tech Electric is another electric vehicle to be produced at the plant in 2024. The plant's expansion also includes a new workshop for assembling batteries, a testament to its commitment to sustainable and electric mobility.

In a show of support for this new venture, CEOs Ivan Espinosa of Nissan and Takao Kato of Mitsubishi Motors visited Douai, France on September 16, 2025, for the first time. They were joined by Francois Provost, the newly appointed CEO of Renault Group, and Jean-Dominique Senard, serving as Chairman.

This meeting focused on the Alliance's delivery of electric vehicles tailored to European customers. By choosing Ampere as their partner for their latest electric models, Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors have demonstrated their confidence in Ampere Douai Plant's capabilities, which have now proven to manufacture six electric vehicles across four distinct brands.

With a projected production of 89,527 units for 2024, the Ampere Douai Plant is poised to lead the way in electric vehicle production, solidifying its position as a hub for sustainable mobility in Europe. The plant is now producing vehicles for four brands, further cementing its status as a symbol of collaboration and innovation in the automotive industry.
