Anheuser-Busch Boosts Production of Non-Beer Products at New York Brewery

Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest beer company, has announced a $9 million investment in its Baldwinsville brewery near Syracuse, New York. The investment aims to enhance beer operations and expand the brewery's capacity to produce its growing range of Beyond Beer products, including NÜTRL Vodka Seltzer and Skimmers Vodka Iced Tea [1][2][3][4][5].

The Baldwinsville brewery, located off Route 31 in the Radisson business park, has long been a specialty of Anheuser-Busch for producing alcohol products. It is the largest brewery in New York state, surpassing Genesee in Rochester and F.X. Matt (Saranac) in Utica [6]. The local brewery employs about 500 people, many of whom are members of Teamsters Local 1149 [7].

As of recently, approximately 60% of the brewery's total output consists of well-known beer brands such as Michelob ULTRA, Busch Light, Budweiser, Bud Light, and Stella Artois. An additional 10% of the production is dedicated to "craft" beers under brands purchased by Anheuser-Busch [1]. The remaining 30% of the brewery's production includes flavored alcohol beverages, seltzers, and other non-beer drinks [1].

The new investment will cover equipment maintenance and updates to the brewery's refrigeration units to support the production growth of Beyond Beer products [3]. Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth stated that the investment supports the communities where their employees live and work [2].

The Baldwinsville brewery was originally a Schlitz brewery, which was bought by Anheuser-Busch in the early 1980s and reopened in 1983 after renovations [8]. Since then, Anheuser-Busch has invested $90 million in the facility over the past five years [9]. The company operates another 90 or so facilities across the country, including warehouses and more [10].

In 2008, Anheuser-Busch was taken over by InBev, a Belgium-based global beer conglomerate, creating the new company, Anheuser-Busch InBev [11]. The company has since continued to expand its Beyond Beer portfolio, with the Baldwinsville brewery playing a key role in this growth. In 2021, the brewery was chosen to launch Bud Light Hard Seltzer, and before that, the Lime-A-Rita brand [1].

This investment, focusing on the Beyond Beer lineup, is a part of Anheuser-Busch's broader business strategy in the alcohol industry, targeting the growing demand for flavored alcohol beverages and seltzers.
