Annual Winner in MGA Category: Direct Commercial Ltd

Direct Commercial Limited (DCL), a specialist commercial motor insurer, has been recognised for its exceptional growth, innovation, and broker-first approach, winning the prestigious 'MGA of the Year' award at the 2025 British Insurance Awards.

The award comes as DCL continues to make waves in the commercial motor insurance sector with its broker-focused approach and innovative solutions. According to the latest DCL Broker Barometer, the insurer is addressing key trends and challenges in delivering flexible cover and improving broker experience.

The surveys reveal that while electrification is a major driver of change, the commercial motor insurance sector faces significant challenges in flexible product development and broker enablement.

Low Adaptation to Electrification

Only 13% of brokers believe their commercial motor clients are adapting well to electric or hybrid vehicles, while 44% say fleets are adapting poorly or not at all. This low adaptation rate is a major market trend highlighting slow electrification, especially among heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).

Fleet Variability in Adoption

Light commercial vehicles (LCVs) show some progress with electric vans making up around 7% of new registrations, but they still represent a small portion of overall fleets. HGVs lag significantly due to practical challenges.

Increasing Pressure from Regulations

Government mandates like the ZEV Mandate are pushing van fleets toward electrification, creating demand for insurance solutions aligned with sustainability goals and regulatory compliance.

Importance of Broker Support

Brokers are critical in helping clients navigate operational, financial, and regulatory changes, matching insurance products to the realities operators face today rather than speculative future market conditions.

Challenges

Practical Barriers to Electrification

Key obstacles include limited availability of electric vehicles, mileage and range constraints, and inadequate charging infrastructure, particularly for HGV operators.

Higher Costs and Risk Management

New technology involves higher maintenance and repair costs for electric vehicles, requiring insurers to craft flexible cover that accommodates evolving risk profiles and cost structures.

Broker Experience and Flexible Cover

Delivering flexible, tailored insurance cover that fits diverse fleets’ needs is crucial. DCL focuses on supporting brokers to improve their service through risk management insights, cost management strategies, and regulation compliance support.

The Need for Improvement

The latest DCL Broker Barometer indicates challenges in broker experience across insurers, insurtechs, and MGAs serving the commercial motor sector. Two-thirds (67%) of brokers report that policyholders' First Notice of Loss (FNOL) procedures need improvement.

The demand for better platform integration is also a notable finding. While only 22% of brokers believe insurers are adequately making their products available on effective platforms like Acturis, there is a demand for improved digital tools and platform integration among the wider insurance provision for the commercial motor sector.

Phil Cunningham, the Chief Executive of DCL, said, "We are delighted to have been recognised for our performance in the commercial motor insurance sector. Our approach emphasizes close broker collaboration to adapt insurance cover and services in line with both current operational realities and emerging market trends."

  • DCL, with its focus on underwriting innovation in the motor insurance sector, is poised to address the growing needs of its clients as electric and hybrid vehicles become more prevalent, given the low adaptation rate among commercial motor fleets.
  • The insurtech sector, including DCL, faces the challenge of developing flexible products and enabling brokers to cater to the diverse requirements of commercial motor fleet operators, considering the surge in regulations promoting electrification and sustainability.
  • In light of the noted need for improved broker experience across the commercial motor insurance sector, DCL's recognition as 'MGA of the Year' serves as a testament to its dedication to enhancing broker experience, platform integration, and digital tools.
