The German aviation giant, Lufthansa, anticipates a downturn in travel demand to the US in the third quarter after a bustling summer travel season. CEO Carsten Spohr made the announcement during a speech at the Economic Journalistic Association Düsseldorf (WPV) on Thursday evening. Lufthansa offers 60 daily flights to the US[1].
While the first quarter showed an improvement over last year, Spohr foresees a decrease in demand during Q3, particularly for flights departing from Germany. The stronger demand and higher prices in the US, however, will lead Lufthansa to increase its share of seats sold in the US[4].
According to Spohr, this slowdown in travel demand is a cyclical pattern. The high-traffic summer travel season is often followed by a quieter travel period as holiday demand subsides and both business and leisure travel decrease[2][3].
Geopolitical factors and policy uncertainties have also contributed to booking declines in Europe-to-US travel, but their influence is more pronounced in specific periods and isn't the primary cause of Lufthansa's Q3 slowdown[5].
The airline is currently not adding any new aircraft orders, and there will be no announcements during the upcoming Paris Air Show next week[1]. Lufthansa is in the midst of its largest modernization program to date, with 250 ordered aircraft already in play[1]. The transformation program, which started two years ago, is progressing according to plan, with the aim of achieving a net profit of €1.5 billion by 2026 and €2.5 billion by 2028[1].
This profit boost doesn't only entail cost-cutting efforts but includes investments in better long-haul seats that allow Lufthansa to charge premium prices[1].

- Lufthansa expects a slowdown in US business in Q3, not only due to the post-summer dip in demand but also because of the cyclical pattern in travel industries.
- Despite the predicted slowdown, Lufthansa is investing in better long-haul seats to charge premium prices, a part of its larger modernization program that also includes cost-cutting efforts.
