Apple is contemplating the launch of a flexible iPhone model.

As of now, no tech giant has managed to revolutionize the foldable smartphone market. However, trustworthy sources suggest that Apple is now dipping its toes into this category, working on two distinct models. These devices have been under development for quite some time now.

Apple is reportedly planning a significant revamp of its iPhone lineup, aiming for growth. Starting from the next year, Apple plans to launch an iPhone that is remarkably slimmer than the 8-millimeter thickness of current models. This model is expected to be more economical than the Pro variants and feature a streamlined camera system to cut costs. Apple's product development has primarily focused on incremental upgrades for years.

Besides, the report also mentions that Apple is considering two foldable handsets. The larger one, with a 19-inch screen, will fold out to a size nearly as big as some desktop monitors, acting as a substitute for a laptop. The smaller model, meanwhile, will fold up to a screen size surpassing the iPhone 16 Pro Max, essentially providing a foldable iPhone version. However, some critical components for these foldable devices are still not finalized. Apple refrained from commenting on these details.

Apple is exploring new avenues to boost its growth, with the iPhone business still contributing around half of its total revenue. Unfortunately, the iPhone division has been experiencing a sales slump, with projected fiscal year 2024 growth barely reaching 1%.

According to reliable sources, Apple's team is aiming for a 2026 release, but the company might require an additional year to tackle the complex technical challenges it's facing, particularly with the hinge, which is essential for opening and closing the device.

The current foldable phones fall short of Apple's expectations

The foldable smartphones available in the market currently do not measure up to Apple's standards in terms of thinness, lightness, or energy efficiency, as explained by Jeff Pu, a Haitong International Securities analyst in Hong Kong. Consequently, Apple has held off from joining the foldable segment until now.

Foldable phones have proven to be a tough sell for competitors like Samsung and Huawei. According to Trendforce's market research, foldable devices are projected to maintain a paltry 1.5% market share of the overall smartphone market this year and will remain a niche product. As per Counterpoint Research, the foldable smartphone sector recorded a decrease in unit sales for the first time in the third quarter, largely due to poor sales of Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Other tech companies have also faced challenges in the foldable smartphone market, as evidenced by the small market share of these devices. Apple, understanding the limitations of current foldable models, is aiming to create a product that exceeds these expectations.
