Approval granted for six new 264-kV power stations by CTC at KOC

Kuwait is taking significant strides towards modernizing its energy infrastructure, with the Central Tenders Committee approving a plan by Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) to construct six new 264-kilovolt power stations across the country.

The move is part of KOC's strategy to upgrade Kuwait's oil infrastructure, aiming to replace nine aging power plants at the Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery with larger, technologically advanced stations.

The first tender for the construction of three 132-kV stations and their overhead lines is for the Ahmadi and Burgan stations. The second tender is for the construction of three 132-kV stations in Al-Maqwa and Burgan, along with the associated power lines.

All six stations are expected to be housed in explosion-resistant buildings and will provide safer work environments for refinery personnel. They are also expected to improve load distribution during emergencies and reduce operational risks.

The new stations are in accordance with the latest quantitative risk assessments and are designed to enhance operational efficiency, safety, and reliability.

Bidders have until November 11 to submit applications for the tenders, following an August 10 call. A preliminary meeting for the tenders is scheduled for September 10.

An initial bid bond of 450,000 dinars is required for the tenders, and document costs for the tenders are set at 5,000 dinars. Tender rules stipulate non-divisible bids, with no alternative offers permitted.

The procurement rules for the two tenders for the construction of the six new 264-kilovolt power plants were set by the responsible government or regulatory authority overseeing energy infrastructure projects in the relevant jurisdiction.

The new stations are expected to be fully operational by September 2027 and will play a crucial role in Kuwait's efforts to modernize its energy infrastructure. This is a major step in ensuring a more reliable and efficient energy supply for the country's growing population and economy.
