Art Gallery Owner Marian Goodman Announces Appointment of Edith Dekyndt as New Director at Gagosian, Among Other Industry Moves on September 17, 2025
In the world of art, the upcoming auction by Sotheby's is creating quite a stir. The tranche of artworks, valued at an estimated $400 M, is from the collection of Leonard Lauder, who recently passed away at 92.
One of the crown jewels of the tranche is Gustav Klimt's Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer (1914-16), expected to net over $150 million. This masterpiece, depicting the wife of the Austrian industrialist Friedrich Lederer, is a testament to Klimt's golden period.
While the auction world is abuzz with this high-profile sale, Brian Merchant, a journalist known for documenting the effects of AI on workers, including artists, has been shedding light on a different side of the art world. His segment focuses on artists who don't sell their work in major galleries or at Art Basel.
Merchant shared stories from artists who have seen work disappear due to cost-cutting executives using AI. This stark reality provides a bleak but necessary corrective to the AI boosterism of artists like Refik Anadol, known for his custom-AI "data paintings".
Meanwhile, the art world is also welcoming new additions. Aaron Baldinger has joined Gagosian as a director, based in New York. Timothy Taylor now represents Martha Tuttle, known for her abstract sculptures. Acquavella Galleries now represents Harumi Klossowska de Rola exclusively in the US.
In the realm of contemporary art, Refik Anadol is not the only artist using AI. Raven Halfmoon's work, represented by Salon 94, also incorporates AI. Templon has added Martial Raysse to its roster, a French artist who has been experimenting with AI in his work.
On the exhibition front, Marian Goodman Gallery will debut the work of Edith Dekyndt at Art Basel Paris in October. Valerie Cassel Oliver, who will serve as the Kippy Stroud Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art starting in spring 2026, has been named the inaugural Kippy Stroud Curator. Stevie Soares has joined Sebastian Gladstone as Los Angeles Director.
As the art world continues to evolve, the intersection of AI and traditional art practices promises to be a fascinating area of exploration. The upcoming auction, with its high-profile pieces and the stories of artists navigating the impact of AI, offers a glimpse into this evolving landscape.
