Asahi Hack Disrupts Beer Supplies in Japan
Japan's leading brewery, Asahi, has fallen victim to a cyber hacker attack. Fortunately, the incident has not compromised customers' personal data or affected the company's European manufacturing operations.
The breach has, however, disrupted Asahi's order and shipment operations in Japan. As a result, popular beer brands like Super Dry are expected to run out in supermarkets within two to three days. Food products are also likely to be in short supply within a week.
Last year, Asahi sold 73 million cases of Super Dry beer in Japan alone. The demand was so high that bottles were sold out during the summer months of 2023, particularly between June and August. The current disruption is a significant blow to the company and consumers alike.
Asahi is not the first company to face such challenges due to cyber attacks. In April, Marks & Spencer also fell victim to a hack. The incident resulted in the theft of millions of customers' personal data and an estimated £300million in lost profits, leaving shoppers unable to buy clothing online for weeks.
Asahi's investigation into the hack is ongoing, with no estimated timeline for recovery. While the breach has not affected customers' personal data or European operations, it has led to significant disruptions in Japan. Consumers can expect shortages of popular beer brands and food products in the coming days and weeks.
