Auto manufacturer Li Auto and CATL sign agreement for enhanced collaboration on battery safety and supercharging technology advancements

In a significant move for the electric vehicle industry, Li Auto and CATL have announced a five-year comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement. This partnership aims to boost their domestic and international business operations, with a focus on battery technology innovation and global distribution.

Currently, Li Auto uses batteries from Sunwoda and Svolt Energy in certain lower-priced model variants. However, with this new agreement, CATL will extend its role as the primary battery supplier, providing high-performance, high-safety, and high-quality power battery systems for Li Auto's entire product lineup.

The product lineup includes ternary lithium batteries, M3P batteries, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, and sodium-ion batteries. CATL and Sunwoda will serve as battery suppliers for Li Auto's upcoming second pure-electric SUV, the Li i6, which is set to launch on September 26.

The collaboration between Li Auto and CATL, which began since Li Auto's founding in 2015, has already proven successful. Cumulative deliveries of Li Auto vehicles equipped with CATL batteries have surpassed 1 million units, and no thermal runaway incidents due to battery-related causes have been reported in these deliveries. On June 11, the one-millionth CATL battery pack for Li Auto was produced.

Li Auto targets monthly sales of up to 10,000 units for the Li i6 electric SUV. This ambitious goal is a testament to the growing demand for electric vehicles and the confidence in the partnership between Li Auto and CATL.

The partnership will also extend to overseas markets, as Li Auto and CATL join hands to expand their global footprint. This move follows similar collaborations by other automakers, such as Volkswagen, Xpeng, Gotion High-Tech, and Mahindra, who are working together to advance electric mobility and battery technology globally.

In addition to this, the agreement aims to deepen collaboration between the two companies in areas such as battery safety and supercharging technology. The German chemical company BASF and the Chinese battery giant CATL are also expanding their partnership from a regional European focus to a global scale, promoting battery technology innovation and global distribution.

With this strategic partnership, Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) and CATL (HKG: 3750) are poised to make significant strides in the electric vehicle industry, contributing to a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.
