Barriers obstructing passage on streets

Bike advocacy group ADFC Düsseldorf presses for enhancements on the recently constructed bike path at Worringer Platz. Despite the installation of sizable directional symbols, a dependable cyclist passageway remains elusive.

In a recent proposal, the ADFC Düsseldorf has expressed concerns about the new bicycle lane on Cologne Street, particularly highlighting dangerous traffic situations at intersections and during vehicle turns. The organisation points to problematic traffic designs, such as park islands and loading zones placed directly on the bike lane, as contributing factors to potential accidents for cyclists. These issues have also been observed on nearby routes, particularly between Zülpicher and Barbarossaplatz, creating hazardous conditions for bicyclists [1].

To address these concerns, the ADFC Düsseldorf suggests several measures to improve cyclist safety. These include better separation of bike lanes from vehicle zones, the installation of advanced safety technologies like bus turning assistants, closing gaps in the bike lane network, and enhanced visibility and signage at intersections. By implementing these steps and continuously monitoring and adapting the bike lane infrastructure, the ADFC believes that significant enhancements can be made to ensure the safety of cyclists on Cologne Street and the surrounding routes in Düsseldorf [1].

However, the ADFC Düsseldorf has not commented on the choice of gray tiles for the bike lane, the conflicts with pedestrians along Cologne Street, or the conflicts with pedestrians in the gastronomy area in their recent proposal. Tyra, a representative of the ADFC, has pointed out that parked vehicles block the bike lane later in the evening, forcing cyclists to swerve into motor vehicle traffic, which can be life-threatening [1].

In a positive note, the ADFC Düsseldorf welcomes the new regulation of traffic for cyclists at Worringer Platz, despite some missing aspects. Furthermore, the organisation has advocated for the new connecting section of Cologne Street to the mouth of Worringer Street to be made safe, either through permanent controls and towing of wrongly parked vehicles or through separation elements from motor vehicle traffic [1].

  1. The ADFC Düsseldorf, in their proposal for improving public-transit safety, suggests the integration of advanced safety technologies, such as bus turning assistants, in the automotive industry to address potential accidents at intersections and during vehicle turns.
  2. The organization also proposes the enhancement of financing for transportation infrastructure projects, emphasizing the need for better separation of bike lanes from vehicle zones to improve safety conditions for cyclists on Cologne Street and nearby routes.
  3. Considering the concerns about parked vehicles blocking bike lanes later in the evening, the ADFC Düsseldorf also calls for measures within the finance industry to subsidize the development of public-transit options, such as electric bicycles or bike-sharing services, to mitigate risks associated with cycling near motor vehicle traffic in certain neighborhoods.
