Breaking News: Fire at Battery Storage Facility in Harbor Gateway Area of Los Angeles

A fire at a battery storage facility in the Harbor Gateway area of Los Angeles, near Gardena and Inglewood, has been successfully contained by firefighters. The incident occurred early Sunday morning, around 4:30 a.m., at the 16000 block of S. Vermont Avenue.

The building, which also housed a subterranean electrical vault, contained a large number of lead-acid batteries. This complicated firefighting efforts due to the toxic smoke produced by the burning batteries.

Firefighters were forced to adopt a defensive firefighting strategy due to the intense fire and hazardous conditions. A total of 144 firefighters, including Hazmat units monitoring air quality and water runoff, were involved in the operation.

Despite the challenging circumstances, the fire was extinguished about five hours later, around 10:30 to 10:45 a.m., with no injuries reported. Residents nearby were advised to shelter in place due to hazardous air quality caused by the battery burn-off.

The initial ignition of the fire is believed to have been triggered by flames from a nearby trash fire spreading into the building's attic, which then caused a small explosion leading to a partial roof collapse. However, the official cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

Safety considerations were a priority during the firefighting efforts, and multiple LAFD units remain on scene to ensure the area is secure.

Dean Fioresi, a web producer for Los Angeles, covered the breaking news throughout Southern California. When not writing about local events, Mr. Fioresi focuses on sports and entertainment.
