Berlin-bound A2 highway remains shut for three consecutive days.

For the third day in a row, the A2 highway leading to Berlin has been sealed off due to a massive olive oil spill. The accident happened near Ziesar, Brandenburg, after a tanker truck tipping over and spilling its contents on the road on Saturday morning.

The cause of the tanker driver's unconsciousness is yet unknown. The unfortunate incident led to extensive damage, as the truck veered off the highway, crashed into the median barrier, and collided with a sign bridge's pillar. Consequently, the tank trailer ruptured, causing an oily film to coat all lanes and the underbelly of the overturned vehicle to explode.

A lengthy roadblock due to slippery conditions

Despite valiant attempts from emergency services to clean up the mess, the greasy film remains stubbornly stuck to the asphalt. Asphalt excavation might be needed to remove the oil and reevaluate the road's stability and the integrity of the damaged sign bridge.

Officials from the Federal Highway Authority are currently conducting assessments and will provide updates regarding the road's reopening at a later date. In the meantime, motorists are being rerouted to avoid traffic congestion, and the stretch towards Hannover remains unhindered.

While the driver was lucky to receive only light injuries and has been hospitalized, the longer-term effects of the environmental mess are still uncertain. Olive oil is known to be biodegradable, but in large quantities, it can potentially disrupt local soil and water quality. Emergency responders are closely monitoring the site and working towards minimizing any ecological damage.

Stay updated for further information on the closure duration and any impact on the environment. The safety of our roadways is a top priority, and all efforts are being made to ensure a swift and thorough clean-up.
