Berlin's Ambitious Solar Plan: 4,400 MWp by 2035
Berlin's Economy Senator Franziska Giffey has set an ambitious goal to significantly boost the city's solar power capacity. She aims to reach 4,400 megawatt-peak (MWp) by 2035, a nearly tenfold increase from current levels. Giffey plans to focus on large commercial rooftops to achieve this target, which would provide a quarter of Berlin's power from solar sources.
Berlin's current solar capacity stands at 459 MWp, powering around 165,000 households annually. Giffey wants to expand this to 4,400 MWp by 2035, accounting for 25% of the city's total power. The SolarPlus funding program has already granted approvals for 27,000 installations, totalling 26.5 million euros since 2022.
To reach this goal, Giffey will target large rooftops of companies and other owners. Currently, many businesses in Berlin aren't utilizing solar energy systems on their expansive roofs, representing a substantial untapped potential.
By 2035, Berlin aims to have a quarter of its power generated from solar installations. This ambitious plan, led by Economy Senator Franziska Giffey, focuses on maximizing the potential of large commercial rooftops. The city has already made significant strides with the SolarPlus funding program and is committed to continuing this momentum.
