BMW May Expand Its Lineup of Adventure SUVs Beyond the Tough Project, According to Insiders

BMW is set to take a significant step into the off-road vehicle market with the potential launch of its most concrete project yet, dubbed "Project Rugged." According to reports, this rugged off-road SUV is slated for a global market debut in the second half of 2029, positioning itself as BMW's answer to the Land Rover Defender.

The trend towards adventure SUVs has gained momentum, with mainstream brands like Hyundai and Ford leaning into ruggedized, lifestyle-focused EVs such as the Ioniq 5 XRT and the Mustang Mach-E Rally. BMW's foray into this niche is a natural progression, given the growing interest in adventure-oriented vehicles.

The smaller BMW X1 and X3 models could potentially be adapted into rugged offshoots during a facelift cycle or next-generation redesign. The larger X5, scheduled for a 2026 launch, and X7, slated for a 2027 launch, present opportunities for BMW to incorporate adventure-focused trims from the ground up.

If approved, the Rugged vehicle would blend traditional BMW luxury with trail-ready engineering, slotting neatly against Rivian and future offerings from German OEMs, Hyundai, and Volvo. Rivian has smaller models R2 and R3 on the horizon, while the Kia EV6 and Volvo EX30 are marketed with adventurous personas.

BMW's internal discussions about off-road vehicles indicate a constant evolution and exploration of new targets, similar to the first BMW X5. The company is reportedly evaluating whether to introduce adventure variants for existing models like the X1, X3, X5, and X7, or create standalone off-road models.

BMW's off-road ambitions align with the company's push towards electrification and sustainability. If the Project Rugged is greenlighted, it will feature PHEV and EV variants, furthering BMW's commitment to a more sustainable future.

The future of BMW's off-road plans remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: BMW's off-road aspirations extend from the X1 through to the X7, showing the company's seriousness about venturing into the adventure niche. Stay tuned for more updates on BMW's Project Rugged.
