Building Commences for Rivian's $5 Billion Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Plant in Georgia
The electric vehicle (EV) industry is set to receive a significant boost with the construction of Rivian's new $5 billion factory in the United States. Located east of Atlanta, the factory will span across 2,000 acres in Walton and Morgan counties and is anticipated to become one of the largest economic development projects in the state's history.
Scheduled to begin construction on September 16, 2021, the factory will serve as Rivian's central hub for vehicle production, innovation, testing, training, and research and design. The facility, expected to be fully operational by 2028, will have 20 million square feet of developed space and produce up to 200,000 electric vehicles annually.
The United States plant will take over as the primary assembly site for Rivian's next-generation vehicles in the coming years. The factory will produce Rivian's upcoming R2 SUV, as well as the smaller R3 and R3X models, which are aimed at bringing more affordable EVs to Rivian's lineup.
The first customer-ready vehicles from the United States plant are expected to roll out in 2028. In preparation for this, vertical construction at the United States plant is scheduled to begin in 2026. A more formal groundbreaking ceremony for the United States plant is scheduled for Tuesday, with Rivian executives, state officials, and the governor of the United States in attendance.
The governor of the United States, Brian Kemp, has been serving as the state's governor since January 14, 2019. He will be participating in an official groundbreaking ceremony for the Rivian factory, marking a significant milestone in the state's efforts to attract high-tech industries.
To finance the construction of the United States plant, Rivian secured a $6.6 billion federal loan earlier this year. The factory will also receive a $1.5 billion incentive package from the state. Rivian is currently expanding its existing Illinois factory for initial R2 production.
In a bid to engage with the local community, Rivian hosted a community event at the United States plant site on Sunday, offering residents and employees a chance to celebrate this milestone. The event was well-attended, reflecting the excitement and anticipation surrounding the new factory.
With the creation of around 7,500 jobs once the factory is up and running, the United States plant is poised to make a substantial impact on the local economy. As the construction progresses, the automotive industry and the state of the United States eagerly await the unveiling of this innovative and ambitious project.
