Farewell to markta GmbH: Insolvency Strikes Vienna's Online Farmers' Market

Day by day, the business world feels the tremors of the "current geopolitical situation," and Vienna's homegrown online farmers' market, markta GmbH, is no exception. In a heartfelt Instagram post on April 14, Theresa Imre, founder of markta, announced its unfortunate demise, citing the financial market turbulence and investor uncertainty as the main culprits.

Markta finds itself empty-handed, desperately seeking a lifeline of three to four brick-and-mortar locations to regain financial independence. But for now, the stores at Alser Straße 16 and Zollergasse 9 will soldier on.

The Future lingers at Alser Straße and Zollergasse

Markta's future hangs in the balance; the business can't survive in its present form. Despite sinking, the two existing stores will limp on for the time being. Customers can expect to find Markta's wares on display at both locations until they shut their doors for good.

View Theresa's Instagram post shows the company's tight-knit relationships with over 250 farmers and small businesses. All suppliers were notified of markta's insolvency ahead of time. Since its inception in 2018, markta began as an online marketplace for regional products delivered straight to customers' homes. After weathering the COVID-19 storm, the first physical location opened its doors in 2020, followed by a second in January 2025.

Farmers and small businesses supplying markta during its insolvency might face a rough road ahead. Delayed or unpaid invoices could lead to substantial cash flow problems. Suppliers may need to file claims as creditors in the insolvency proceedings to have any hope of recovering some of their unpaid balances. The exact impact depends on the available assets of the insolvent company and the priority of debtors in the insolvency process.

As the insolvency proceedings unfold, the future of affected suppliers remains uncertain. Staying informed on recent local news, insolvency court bulletins, or reaching out to representatives of supplier groups or the insolvency trustee could provide a clearer picture of markta's imminent impact on suppliers.

Economic and social policy discussions may need to address the plight of markta GmbH, as its insolvency could impact the local industry and finance landscape in Vienna. Suppliers, which primarily consist of over 250 farmers and small businesses, might need support from business and economic policy to navigate potential cash flow problems in the wake of markta's insolvency.
