Business leaders in New York City consider providing active shooter training to employees, alarmed by the Shane Tamura massacre incident.
In a tragic event that unfolded on Monday evening, a mass shooting occurred at the Manhattan office tower located at 345 Park Avenue. The shooter, identified as Shane Tamura, 27, entered the building while carrying a semi-automatic weapon.
The shooting spree began around 6:30 p.m., with reports of the incident starting to come in at 6:28 p.m. Tamura, a casino security guard, is believed to have driven cross country to carry out his murderous act.
The shooting resulted in four fatalities. Among the victims was an off-duty NYPD officer, Didarul Islam, 36, who was working security at the building. Another victim was Wesley LePatner, a rising star in Blackstone's real estate business, who was shot and killed in the lobby. A woman cowering behind a pillar in the lobby was also shot and killed by Tamura. Another man reported being shot and injured in the lobby, but is currently in critical but stable condition.
Shane Tamura also shot and killed a woman on the 33rd floor before turning the gun on himself, suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. A security guard crouching at his desk in the lobby was also shot and killed by Tamura.
In the aftermath of the shooting, businesses are increasing security measures, focusing on protecting the rank and file employees. Kathy Wylde, the CEO of the NYC Partnership, mentioned that businesses will remind employees about safety protocols and increase visible security in lobbies. Another executive suggested a push for formal active shooter training, involving awareness of potential gunmen, assessment of the situation, and the "run, hide, fight" strategy.
Companies such as Blackstone and the NFL, which have offices in the New York office building where the shooting occurred, have committed to additional security measures, including active shooter trainings.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of vigilance and preparedness in the face of such tragedies. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims during this difficult time.
