Cathay United Bank Expands into Japan, Marking Its Debut in the Japanese Market

Cathay United Bank is making its first foray into Japan with the establishment of a branch in Tokyo and a sub-branch in Fukuoka City. This expansion, approved by Japan's Financial Supervisory Commission in July 2025, will increase the bank's overseas business locations to 70 across 13 regions worldwide.

The strategic move aims to support Taiwanese companies expanding in the Northeastern Asian market by providing cross-border financial services. Tokyo, as a political and financial hub, with a concentration of government agencies and international companies, was chosen as the primary base for this expansion. Fukuoka City, another location with a growing business environment, will also house a sub-branch.

Tokyo's status as an economic powerhouse in Asia, with strong sovereign ratings, cutting-edge industry technologies, and stable corporate performance, makes it an attractive location for Taiwanese firms setting regional headquarters. The expansion is poised to boost Cathay United Bank's capacity to provide cross-border services, aligning with its vision to forge strategic partnerships between Taiwanese and Japanese businesses.

Cathay United Bank currently operates in several overseas locations, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Laos, China, Cambodia, and Vietnam, where it has a joint venture bank. The bank also holds representative offices in Thailand and Indonesia.

With the new locations in Japan, Cathay United Bank intends to reinforce the effectiveness of its international resource allocation in response to shifting supply chains. The bank aspires to become a leading regional bank in Asia, providing reliable financial services to a broader customer base in Japan. This expansion marks a new chapter in the bank's business development in the Asia-Pacific region, aiming to advance business development and economic development with its customers.

The first sub-branch in Fukuoka City is scheduled to open, and the bank plans to base its Japanese operations in Tokyo. This move reflects Cathay United Bank's strategy to strengthen regional partnerships and expand in Northeast Asia. The bank aims to provide reliable financial services to a broader customer base in Japan, further solidifying its position as a leading player in the Asian banking sector.

Cathay United Bank's expansion into Japan signifies a significant venture into a new market, which will bolster their international business operations within the finance industry. By establishing a branch in Tokyo and a sub-branch in Fukuoka City, the bank aims to foster strategic partnerships between Taiwanese and Japanese businesses, ultimately providing cross-border financial services for expanding companies.
