A 2024 Chevrolet Equinox battery electric vehicle caught fire on a roadway in Boston this week, causing a significant delay for drivers and requiring multiple fire vehicles and hours to make safe. The fire, which occurred in open air, allowed firefighters to tap into a local fire hydrant on an adjacent street.
The incident highlighted the unique challenges firefighters face when dealing with electric vehicle (EV) fires. Unlike conventional vehicle fires, EV fires, particularly those involving lithium-ion batteries, can reach extremely high temperatures, often exceeding 800°C during thermal runaway events, and can persist for hours, resisting traditional water-based fire suppression methods.
Key reasons for the increased difficulty include thermal runaway and propagation, high temperatures and toxic gas release, resistance to conventional extinguishing techniques, and safety and access challenges. When one cell undergoes thermal runaway, it can rapidly propagate heat and fire to adjacent cells, causing a chain reaction within the battery pack that reignites even after initial suppression efforts.
The Equinox EV fire was initially put out by a Massachusetts State Trooper using a fire extinguisher. However, the driver, Brian, expressed apologies for the traffic disruption caused by the fire, acknowledging the inconvenience it may have caused to other road users.
