Free Voters Advocate for Protecting Stationary Retail and Urban Centers in Bavaria

The Free Voters, a political faction in Bavaria, have announced a draft resolution to be discussed at their upcoming faction meeting in Bamberg. This resolution aims to address the concerns of local traders in Bavarian cities and towns, who are facing unfair competition from online marketplaces, particularly the Temu platform and the "Bürgerportal."

The Free Voters view urban centers as places of encounter, reminiscent of the agora in ancient Greece. They believe that personal interaction is crucial to a democratic society and the preservation of these urban centers. This belief extends to their concerns about stationary retail, which they fear is being threatened by online competition, particularly from Asia.

To combat this issue, the Free Voters are advocating for stricter customs regulations for international online trade. They are urging the abolition of the 150 euro customs exemption and the introduction of a customs processing fee. This move is intended to level the playing field for local traders, who currently face challenges in maintaining attractive storefronts in urban centers due to competition from overseas.

In addition to these measures, the Free Voters are also demanding a 7% VAT for beverages as a means to maintain urban centers and village cores. They have rejected the introduction of a new tax on "to go" single-use packaging, citing it as an additional burden for retail.

The Free Voters' meeting in Bamberg will not only discuss these matters but also touch on various other issues, including the preservation of urban centers and the customs regulations for international online trade. This meeting is a significant step in the Free Voters' mission to protect local traders and uphold the democratic values they hold dear.
