Title: German Railway Modernization: Shutdown on Left Rhine Line from May 20
Get ready, rail folk! The German Railway's got some major construction measures lined up for the Left Rhine line commuters. Starting from May 20, they're gonna modernize the rail infrastructure between Koblenz and Mainz, as announced by the railway authorities.
From second to 19th May, crews worked north of Koblenz, and now it's time for the subsequent track section between Koblenz and Mainz-Mombach to get the modern railway treatment. Over a period between 20th May and 15th June, they'll be renewing tracks, switches, bridges, building noise protection walls, doing rockfall protection work, and even detecting unexploded ordnance.
To minimize disruptions to rail traffic, they'll be taking other construction work around Koblenz and Mainz into account during planning. They'll carry out work "under rolling stock" and during night hours wherever possible. However, some track sections will inevitably need to be closed for rail traffic, especially during work in the track area or when using special equipment.
Temporary changes are on the way for regional and long-distance train traffic. The trains of line RE 2 may only run partially depending on the construction section, with replacement buses being used. The Mittelrheinbahn will be running with changed timetables during the day, with nighttime rail replacement traffic. In long-distance traffic, trains between Cologne and Mainz will run at least every two hours with detours. The stop at Bingen Hauptbahnhof cannot be served by long-distance traffic during construction work. Alternative change connections are available between Cologne and Mainz via Frankfurt Airport.
For those traveling from Frankfurt to the Middle Rhine area, the Right Rhine railway line might be a more reliable alternative during the construction period. This line, which passes through Wiesbaden and Rüdesheim, runs along the opposite bank of the Rhine River and is less affected by the current works.
Keep in mind that the renovations on the Left Rhine line are part of larger plans for Germany's rail network, with more works scheduled for 2028 and beyond. But for now, the focus is on the section between Koblenz and Mainz, with replacement bus services to minimize inconvenience during active construction phases.
Stay tuned, passengers! The ride might be a bumpier one for a while, but it'll be worth it for the modernized rail infrastructure on the Left Rhine line. For the latest updates, visit the DB website, but remember that information may still be subject to change as construction progresses.
