Construction begins on Ngoc Hoi Bridge, aimed at enhancing regional transportation links in Hanoi.
Hanoi, Vietnam, witnessed a significant milestone on August 19, as several major transport infrastructure projects commenced construction. The event, part of a nationwide initiative, featured 80 groundbreaking and inauguration ceremonies for key projects, one of which is the construction of the Ngoc Hoi Bridge.
The Ngoc Hoi Bridge and its approach roads began construction on August 19, marking the start of one of the largest transport undertakings in Hanoi. The investor for the project is the Hanoi City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board. The main bridge will stretch about 680m, featuring a 350m cable-stayed span and a 126m high tower. The structure will be 38m wide, accommodating six lanes for motor vehicles and two mixed-use lanes.
The Ngoc Hoi Bridge is a crucial component of Hanoi's Transportation Master Plan through 2030 with a vision towards 2050, which outlines the construction of 18 road bridges crossing the Red River. The project aims to connect Hanoi with Hung Yen province and is expected to boost regional and interregional development, supporting GDP growth of at least 8 per cent in 2025, and targeting double-digit growth in the following years.
Another significant project in Hanoi is the construction of Van Phuc Bridge and a 7.7km connection road to national highway 32, with a total investment of $138 million. These projects are intended to create jobs, improve livelihoods, and raise living standards. Hanoi alone had 8 major urban transportation infrastructure projects started, including a 14km road segment to Gia Binh Airport with a total investment of $1.68 billion.
The completion of the Ngoc Hoi Bridge project is targeted for 2028. The estimated cost of the project is $474 million, with funding coming from both Hanoi's municipal budget and central government allocations. The Ngoc Hoi Bridge will span approximately 7.5km, with 5.2km located within Hanoi and 2.3km extending into Hung Yen province.
The ceremony for the groundbreaking of the Ngoc Hoi Bridge was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung, Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Viet Hung, leaders from Hanoi and Hung Yen province, and local residents. The event signifies Vietnam's proactive approach to socioeconomic infrastructure, reflecting the commitment of the political system, stakeholders, and the people.
In addition to the infrastructure projects, Hanoi is rolling out additional public amenities to accommodate the large crowds expected at the September 2 parade. Meanwhile, Toshin Development has started construction on Westlake Square Hanoi, a landmark mixed-use complex in the Starlake urban area.
The Hanoi Department of Tourism reported a robust performance in July, with the capital welcoming approximately 2.8 million visitors, up 10.3 per cent on-year. This growth is a testament to the city's attractiveness and the success of its ongoing development efforts. With these major projects underway, Hanoi continues to forge ahead in its long-term plan for sustainable urban development through 2030 and beyond.
