Construction of SuedLink, the energy transition project, is ongoing in South Lower Saxony.
The construction of SuedLink, one of the largest infrastructure projects of Germany's energy transition, has officially commenced in the districts of Hildesheim, Northeim, and Göttingen, Lower Saxony. This significant development will connect wind-rich regions of Northern Germany with Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, supplying around 10 million households with climate-friendly electricity.
The approval decisions for the approximately 100-kilometer section from Elze to Friedland were issued by the Federal Network Agency in the summer, allowing full-scale construction work to begin. The 700-kilometer connection will be realised by the transmission grid operators TransnetBW and TenneT.
TenneT CEO Tim Meyerjürgens and TransnetBW CEO Dr. Werner Goetz have emphasised the close and cooperative collaboration between the two companies for the SuedLink project. TransnetBW is responsible for the southern section of the route and the converter in Baden-Württemberg, while TenneT is responsible for the northern section of the route and the converters in Schleswig-Holstein and Bavaria.
The joint venture Suedlink South Lower Saxony, composed of Köster GmbH and STRABAG AG, has been awarded the deep construction work in South Lower Saxony for the SuedLink project. Extensive public participation, the examination of alternative route options, and the use of underground cabling ensure local public acceptance.
Lower Saxony's Minister President Olaf Lies stated that SuedLink demonstrates how large infrastructure projects can be successfully implemented with municipalities, agriculture, and nature conservation. The project is crucial for grid stability and supply security.

TransnetBW has emphasised that the intensive dialogue with the population, districts, and municipalities, as well as agricultural associations, has been crucial to the success of SuedLink. The construction measures for SuedLink in South Lower Saxony will occur successively and partially in parallel in the coming months.
This milestone in the energy transition marks a crucial step towards a more sustainable future for Germany, ensuring a climate-friendly energy supply for the whole of the country.
