Construction project concludes after a quarter-century, traffic resumes flow on previously congested route.
A South Wales road finally sees the light of day, 23 grueling years after roadworks first commenced. This is the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road, infamously known as one of the UK's "most mind-boggling" road projects, costing around £2bn in an upgrade program.
The last stage of the dual carriageway to be completed was sections 5 and 6, from Dowlais to Hirwaun. The Welsh government boasts that this final phase of the project has generated over 2,200 new job opportunities across the country.
Ken Skates, the Transport secretary, emphasized the importance of improving transportation as a top priority. Despite acknowledging the project's complexity and the numerous hurdles faced, he thanked the public for their patience.
The completion of the road has sparked mixed feelings among local residents and businesses. Damien Pearce, owner of Valley Carpets, shared his struggles with our newspaper, attributing the business's hardships to the frequent road closures. However, he remains optimistic, acknowledging that the completed road will undoubtedly benefit the local area.
Sam Rowlands, the Welsh government's shadow transport secretary, expressed relief for the long-suffering residents and businesses, but also highlighted the project's long gestation, excessive costs, and the need for important lessons to be learned.
On the other hand, Mark Drakeford, the finance secretary and former first minister, emphasized the enormous benefits the project has provided for local people, including £400m for the local supply chain.
When the news broke in January that the Heads of the Valleys Road would be completed this year, local businesses were quick to respond. For Damien Pearce, the store's newfound visibility and the completed road will undoubtedly boost the local area.
