Construction work on Hamburg's Elbgaustraße set to continue until 2027.
Beginning Thursday, a significant arterial road in Hamburg will be closed for two years due to road improvement works. The project aims to provide more space for buses, cyclists, and pedestrians.
The Elbgaustraße, one of the city's busiest thoroughfares, will undergo renovation work in several sections over the next two years, starting this Thursday until May 2027. Drivers can expect increased traffic congestion. Simultaneous work in two separate sections will be carried out to expedite the construction period.
The first phase of the construction project will last until December 2025. In the southern section, the Farnhornweg to Luettkamp/Langbargheide will be affected, while the northern stretch from Redingskamp to Niekampsweg/Furtweg will undergo renovation.
The second phase is expected to begin in January 2026 and will last approximately until May 2026. The closure will affect the southern section from Luettkamp to Spreestraße, and the northern section from the railway bridge to Weidplan. Temporary full closures may occasionally occur in the summer of 2026.
Pedestrians and cyclists can bypass the construction area freely, while drivers will need to follow detours. Inbound traffic will be redirected as a one-way street near the Elbgaustraße S-Bahn station, and outbound traffic will follow a detour passing through the Farnhornweg and Schnackenburgallee, which runs near the Barclays Arena and Volksparkstadion. Buses will also be redirected, and updates on service disruptions will be provided by the HVV.
Approximately 36,000 vehicles use the 2-kilometer stretch of the Elbgaustraße daily. The renovation project includes improving the roadway and developing the Elbgaustraße for cyclists and pedestrians. The Radroute 18 is also planned to pass over the Elbgaustraße. However, the section under the railway bridge will still only have shared paths for cyclists and pedestrians. In addition to the improvements for bikes and pedestrians, the bus stops will be renovated. Unfortunately, 28 trees will need to be felled, but this will be offset by planting 39 new trees.
Construction work has already begun on the Elbgaustraße since early April. The Hamburg Energy Networks are installing new power cables until the end of August, and the city is also renovating the water pipes to the south of the railway bridge.

The road improvement works on Elbgaustraße, initially focusing on two separate sections, will involve enhancements in both the industry and transportation sectors, as the project aims to provide smoother traffic flow for buses and also improve conditions for cyclists and pedestrians. In the financial aspect, the city of Hamburg will invest in renovating bus stops, planting new trees, and upgrading water and power infrastructure along the length of Elbgaustraße.
