Consumerism is under attack by Intersport, with the retailer aiming to counteract excess consumption.
Intersport, the leading sports retailer in Germany, is set to expand its footprint significantly over the next few years. The retail giant plans to open more than five large premium stores by the end of 2026, with at least 100 new stores in Germany by the end of the decade.
These premium stores will offer exclusive services such as trail running events, ski tests, marathon preparation activities, and activities related to the upcoming FIFA World Cup. The retailers are also set to get involved with Hyrox events, an indoor competition that is the fastest-growing fitness sport worldwide and still rising.
Intersport's business year runs from early October to the end of September, and the last quarter is particularly important due to high demand for running sports articles. The retailer's bricks-and-mortar business saw an increase over the summer, and its online business has grown significantly compared to the market.
Intersport's current network consists of approximately 700 retailers and over 1,400 stores nationwide, with more than 400 of these stores operating under the Intersport name. The retailer aims to achieve a market share of over 30 percent by 2030 and increase its turnover to around six billion euros by the same year.
Intersport is also investing heavily in its own online marketplace and digitalization. The retailer made a turnover of 3.46 billion euros in 2023/24, which was one percent below the previous year's peak. However, the company has already exceeded more than half of its 2023 target for store expansion.
Intersport's expansion plans come as it continues to be the official partner of several Hyrox races. Around 12,000 athletes are expected at the Hyrox event in Hamburg at the beginning of October. The large premium stores will also offer activities related to the Hyrox competition, providing customers with a unique and immersive sports shopping experience.
As Intersport continues to grow, it remains committed to offering its customers the best possible shopping experience, both online and in-store. With its focus on digitalization, exclusive services, and partnerships with major sporting events, Intersport is well-positioned to meet the evolving needs of sports enthusiasts in Germany.
