Bosch Power Tools to Close Sebnitz Plant, IG Metall Criticises Decision

In a move that will significantly impact the city of Bautzen in Eastern Saxony, Bosch has announced the closure of its Power Tools plant in Sebnitz by the end of 2026. The decision, according to Bosch, is a reorganization of global production structures due to increasing competition and price pressures in the power tool division.

However, the news has not been met with approval by IG Metall, the trade union in question. Uwe Garbe, the first authorized representative of IG Metall Ostsachsen, has criticised the management for not giving the Sebnitz location a fair chance for a turnaround. He accuses Bosch of using legal means to force the works council into a conciliation procedure early, with the intention of quickly winding down the Sebnitz location and reducing severance payments.

The closure of the Sebnitz plant will affect around 280 employees, leaving many uncertain about their future. IG Metall Ostsachsen trade union secretary, Axel Drescher, states that the approach makes colleagues in East Germany feel like second-class citizens. He also accuses Bosch of evading its social responsibility towards the people in the Sebnitz region by relocating production abroad.

The early involvement of the conciliation body in Sebnitz negotiations is another point of contention for IG Metall. They argue that this contrasts with ongoing negotiations elsewhere and fuels a feeling among eastern German workers of being treated unfairly.

IG Metall also opposes the relocation of production to Hungary, citing concerns about job losses and the impact on local employees. The economic location of Sebnitz is heavily affected by this decision, and the closure of the plant will undoubtedly leave a significant void in the community.

As the closure date approaches, IG Metall will continue to advocate for the workers affected by this decision, pushing for fair settlement modalities and a more considerate approach from Bosch management. The union's efforts aim to ensure that the employees of Sebnitz are not left behind in the face of global reorganization.
