Katherina Rich Slams Robert Habeck Over Northvolt Fiasco

Criticizes Habeck for Financing Northvolt: Reiche Expresses Disapproval

In a heated government interrogation, Federal Economics Minister Katherina Rich has criticized her predecessor Robert Habeck for his handling of state support for the now-bankrupt battery manufacturer Northvolt. Rich accused Habeck of making an "erroneous" investment decision and called the support "reckless."

Rich's comments come after the Federal Audit Office critiqued Habeck's loose distribution of taxpayer funds to Northvolt, allegedly underestimating economic risks. Both Habeck and Rich have been summoned to appear before the Bundestag's Budget Committee over Northvolt's affairs.

The failing battery manufacturer received around 600 million euros from the state promotional bank KfW for its planned factory construction. With half of the investment coming from the federal government and the other half from the state, additional funds were set aside for interest and procedural costs. As of now, the EU Commission has approved direct funding amounting to approximately 700 million euros, but the money has yet to be disbursed.

Caution Sparks Over Battery Factory in Northern Germany

The fate of the factory under construction in Heide, Schleswig-Holstein remains uncertain. With a substantial portion of the loan unpaid, concerns about the future of the project are rising. Back in March, Northvolt filed for insolvency in Sweden.

An internal report from the consultancy firm PwC, provided to the Budget Committee by the Federal Ministry of Economics, shows that despite the company's dependency on external capital and potential risks, the auditors deemed a repayment of the bond, including interest, as plausible. The report also estimated a high sales potential for Northvolt's battery cells. However, with Northvolt now insolvent, these predictions might be in doubt.

Though specific details on the controversy surrounding Northvolt's Heide factory are sparse, history has shown that political disagreements over state subsidies for battery manufacturing projects are common in Germany. With questions hovering over the future of this project and the missteps in handling Northvolt, this fiasco will likely spark further debates regarding fiscal responsibility and the role of government intervention in industries.
