Critics Dissect and Evaluate 'Kraven The Hunter': Marvel's Antagonist-Centered Cinematic Fare

Marvel's solo film, Kraven the Hunter, featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Russell Crowe, is receiving harsh criticism from film critics.

Scheduled for release in previews on Thursday and nationwide on Friday, this film is based on the infamous villain from the Marvel Comics' Spider-Man universe.

The film's synopsis, as presented by Marvel, states, "Kraven's (Taylor-Johnson) tumultuous relationship with his merciless father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Crowe), pushes him towards a vengeful path, resulting in consequences that make him not only the world's greatest hunter, but also one of its most dreaded."

Carrying an R rating, the movie is helmed by director J.C. Chandor, known for All is Lost and Triple Frontier. As of Wednesday, Rotten Tomatoes critics are relentless towards Kraven the Hunter, consolidating a 16% "rotten" rating based on 49 reviews.

Although the film has not yet hit theaters, Kraven the Hunter's RT Popcornmeter score, based on verified user ratings on the aggregator site, is yet to be determined.

What Are the Individual Critics Saying About ‘Kraven The Hunter’?

The release of Kraven the Hunter follows a report in The Wrap, which indicated that Sony's Spider-Man Universe has decided to focus exclusively on Spider-Man after Kraven the Hunter, having already released Madame Web and Venom: The Last Dance this year.

Consequently, some RT critics are not only criticizing Kraven the Hunter but also expressing regret for the lack of future opportunities for the character.

Bill Bria from The Wrap penned a "rotten" review of the film, expressing, "The true tragedy surrounding Kraven the Hunter isn't that it symbolizes a future that will never be, but that it could have allowed this universe to conclude with some semblance of dignity."

David Fear from Rolling Stone also gave the film a "rotten" rating, stating, "We don't know if Kraven the Hunter is truly the final chapter of the SSMU. What we do know, however, is that it delivers a self-inflicted killshot."

David Schrager from The Daily Beast also labeled Kraven the Hunter "rotten," remarking, "A mundane and heavy-handed saga that could potentially bring an end to Sony's live-action Spider-Verse, if not the entire genre, Kraven the Hunter is an uninspiring concoction that attempts to blend Marvel, Tarzan, and John Wick during dull and forgettable stages."

In addition, IndieWire's David Ehrlich scrutinizes Kraven the Hunter's visual effects, writing, "The CGI evolves from 'kitschily whimsical' to 'produced as economically as possible by a studio attempting to recoup its investments' at such a rapid pace that it comes within inches of Scorpion King territory by the end."

However, some RT critics, such as Kristy Puchko, found Kraven the Hunter entertaining enough to provide it with a "fresh" review.

In her review for Mashable, Puchko states, "This off-the-wall superhero movie is at its best when it gleefully embraces its most absurd elements. In those instances, Kraven the Hunter offers chaotic fun that's a pleasure to experience on the big screen."
