Customs halt criticized as "awful" by Trump
Update on Trump's Tariff Dispute and Elon Musk's Government Exit
US President Donald Trump has strongly criticized a court ruling that revoked most of the tariffs his government imposed on trading partners. Trump calls the decision "political" and accuses the judges of being "backroom crooks," urging the Supreme Court to swiftly overturn the ruling.
The revocation, announced by the US Court of International Trade on Wednesday, stated that Trump had exceeded his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The US government has since filed an appeal, and on Thursday, an appeals court decided to maintain the tariffs for the duration of the review process.
The tariffs' repercussions extend to the economy, with Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expressing concern over potential new trade restrictions. Wadephul stated that a strong transatlantic partnership requires strong economic relations in the future and voiced clear opposition to new tariff barriers. He cautioned that both sides would suffer if tariffs were imposed.
Meanwhile, Trump plans to hold a press conference with tech mogul Elon Musk on Friday, Musk's last day as a special government employee for state efficiency. The conference aims to discuss Musk's departure from the government department called Doge, which he had assisted in streamlining through cuts in personnel and expenses. Musk has decided to refocus on his companies, including Tesla and SpaceX.
There is currently no evidence linking Elon Musk's departure from the government department to Trump's tariff policies. The court's ruling on tariffs and the impact on businesses and economies is a separate issue.
