Customs Raid Finds 96 Cases of Labor Law Violations in Hotel Industry

The Main Customs Office Bielefeld, along with its FKS locations in Bielefeld, Hamm, Herford, and Paderborn, recently took part in a nationwide focus inspection. The inspections uncovered irregularities in 96 cases, highlighting issues such as minimum wage violations and illegal employment practices within the hotel and catering industry.

On September 19, 2025, the Financial Control Black Work of the Customs (FKS) carried out random inspections in the hotel and catering industry. A total of 63 customs officers were involved, questioning 250 employees across various businesses. The inspections revealed a significant number of violations, including 79 cases of minimum wage violations, seven cases of suspected social security evasion, and three cases of illegal employment of foreigners. Following these findings, 12 administrative offense proceedings and four criminal proceedings were initiated on-site.

The general minimum wage in Germany has been 12.82 euros per hour since January 1, 2025. Sascha Gawenda, a representative of the Hauptzollamt Bielefeld's FKS operations, confirmed that subsequent inspections will involve customs officers comparing employee data with company records to ensure compliance with labor laws.

The inspections underscore the commitment of the Main Customs Office Bielefeld and its FKS locations to combat illegal employment practices and ensure fair labor standards within the hotel and catering industry. Further investigations are ongoing to address the violations and enforce the minimum wage laws.
