Customs Raids in Aachen Region Net 12 Offenses in Minimum Wage Probe

Customs authorities in Aachen have conducted inspections across the city region and districts of Düren and Euskirchen, focusing on compliance with minimum wage laws and social security obligations in the hotel and gastronomy sector. The inspections, which began in January 2025, have led to several criminal and administrative offense proceedings.

Since the general minimum wage increased to €12.82 per hour on January 1, 2025, the Financial Control of Under-the-Table Work of the Customs (FKS) has been vigilant in ensuring businesses adhere to the Minimum Wage Act (MiLoG).

The inspections involved interviews with 41 employees and checks on eight businesses. Four criminal proceedings were initiated for suspected wage withholding, misappropriation, and illegal employment of foreigners. Additionally, eight administrative offense proceedings were opened, including for failure to comply with identity document obligations and immediate notification violations.

The Customs places a high priority on combating under-the-table work in the hotel and catering industry. Extensive follow-up checks are conducted to compare employee data with payroll and financial accounting records, contributing to securing social systems and state revenues. The inspections also aim to ensure fair working and competitive conditions.

The Customs' inspections in the Aachen region have resulted in several legal proceedings and highlight the agency's commitment to enforcing minimum wage laws and social security obligations. Businesses in the hotel and gastronomy sector are reminded to ensure compliance with these regulations to maintain fair working conditions and prevent further legal action.
