Taxation adjustments on the agenda for today? - Daily happenings during the early part of the day

By Lisa Becke

The German coalition government finds itself in a heated debate over tax increases to fill a projected €30 billion budget deficit in 2027. The Finance Minister, Lars Klingbeil (SPD), has proposed raising income and estate taxes, particularly on high-income earners and wealthy individuals, to promote fairness[1][2]. However, the conservative CDU members, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, oppose tax hikes, emphasizing fiscal consolidation and supporting businesses[2][4].

Klingbeil has stated that people with very high incomes and assets should ask themselves what contribution they are making to make the country fairer[3]. He has also made it clear that he won’t "take any option off the table" regarding tax increases[1][2]. This stance has caused a dispute within the current CDU-SPD coalition government, with the CDU members expressing concern about the impact on economic competitiveness and medium-sized businesses[4].

The tax increase debate also risks jeopardizing existing or planned tax breaks, such as the extension of electric vehicle (EV) tax rebates for private owners[5]. As the government grapples with these challenges, the tension reflects broader challenges in balancing fiscal responsibility and economic growth within the coalition[1][2][4][5].

Meanwhile, the international situation continues to demand the attention of the federal chancellor, Friedrich Merz. Against the backdrop of China's aggressive actions in the South China Sea, Foreign Minister Wadephul visits Japan and Indonesia on Monday, August 18[6].

In other news, a counter-summit involving Ukrainian President Selenskyj, several European heads of state and government, including Federal Chancellor Merz, is taking place today[7]. Selenskyj's country is heavily dependent on American support for its defense[8]. The Europeans and Ukraine are working to ensure that the USA and Russia do not create facts in the Ukraine war without them[9].

Elsewhere, a decision regarding the takeover of ProSiebenSat.1 will be announced today[10]. In domestic politics, Dennis Radtke, head of the workers' wing of the CDU, has suggested that the federal government must "spit in its hands"[11].

In lighter news, singer Pietro Lombardi is single again, following a separation from Laura Maria Rypa[12]. And finally, Julia Klöckner's appearance in Koblenz has received criticism[13]. The Ministry of Transport is hiring a headhunter to find a successor for the departing railway CEO, Richard Lutz[14]. It would be a first: there has never been a female head of the railway.

Stay tuned for more updates as the day unfolds.
