On June 1st, 2023, around 2 am, nearly 10 tons of potatoes were unloaded onto two sections of the E45 Motorway in South Jutland, as per the prosecution's statement. At the time, low visibility added to the risk of traffic collisions, and the slippery potatoes further complicated matters.
Two hours later, more potatoes made their way onto the Great Belt Bridge, causing "an extremely perilous situation," according to a Funen police officer who attended the scene.

Initially, the potatoes were believed to be an accident, but evidence revealed they were, in fact, dumped as a form of protest against a law amendment levying a kilometre-based tax for hauliers.
Speaking to Ritzau, Barrett asserted he never aimed to imperil others, making an appeal a potential course of action. Based in the Jutland town of Give, Barrett is one of four individuals found guilty in the case, convicted of aggravated reckless driving, jeopardizing the lives of other road users, and vandalism.
Prosecutor Frederik Hald told Ritzau the court's judgement and penalty serve as a robust reminder about the gravity of such protest actions. Barrett's appeal will be heard at the Østre Landsret high court, with at least one other individual planning to join him in the appeal.
