DEKRA and UNICEF: An Alliance for Clean Water and Brighter Futures
The testing heavyweight DEKRA has teamed up with UNICEF to provide children in Ethiopia and India with life-giving H2O, fortifying their communities in the face of climate change's wrath. The joint venture was announced at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC).
Their objective? Ensuring sustainable access to clean, budget-friendly H2O for roughly 860,000 children and their families in Ethiopia and India. DEKRA lends a hand with a total of five million euros over the subsequent five years to aid UNICEF in their mission.
H2O: The Foundation for a Better Life
Pure H2O is crucial for children—yet, UNICEF reports that more than 450 million minors reside in zones with severe water insecurity. Every two minutes, a child succumbs to a disease spawned by polluted H2O. The alliance supports UNICEF in upholding their global pledge to "Water Security for All," an initiative geared towards enhancing living conditions for particularly vulnerable populations through dynamic, climate-resistant WASH programs (water, sanitation, and hygiene).
As Kitty van der Heijden, UNICEF's Deputy Executive Director, says, "Children bear the least responsibility for the global water and climate crisis but suffer the most from its effects. Funding for water security offers incredible opportunities—for children, the economy, and our planet's future. As climate action is vital for long-term climate stability, it's not enough. Climate adaptation addresses the impactions already taking place. Companies play a crucial role in bridging this chasm. DEKRA shows this commitment through substantially backing our WASH programs."
Partnership with Impact — Local and Global
Funds will be allocated towards solar-powered H2O pumps, developing technical expertise centers for solar power transfer and training, and implementing groundbreaking H2O treatment technologies. These initiatives empower communities to adapt to climate change while also fostering education, health, and local development opportunities. Success will be tracked and reported using sustainable development indicators based on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
DEKRA Steps Up — A New Era for Corporate Climate Responsibility
The UNICEF alliance is part of DEKRA's "DEKRA Climate Impact" program, initiated to commemorate the company's centennial. In this program, DEKRA takes corporate climate responsibility by merging ambitious, science-based internal decarbonization with a 1.5°C target with targeted funding of external projects with verified climate impact. The company moves beyond traditional compensation models and blanket "climate neutrality" statements in favor of an outcome-oriented approach.
"DEKRA's Climate Impact program sets a powerful example for companies to take responsibility for global climate challenges," stated DEKRA's CEO, Stan Zurkiewicz, at the alliance announcement in Hamburg. "For us, the partnership with UNICEF is an integral part of this commitment."
At DEKRA, Safety IsOur Priority
