Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, officially transfers possession of the BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project in Worli to its respective owners.

The first phase of the BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project in Worli, Mumbai, has reached a significant milestone. On a momentous day presided over by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, 556 newly constructed flats were ceremoniously handed over to eligible residents.

This historic event took place at Yashwant Natya Mandir, Matunga, marking the completion of the first phase of the project. The redevelopment, managed by MHADA (Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority), is part of one of India's largest urban renewal efforts, covering about 86 acres across Worli, Parel (N M Joshi Marg), and Naigaon.

The project involves the redevelopment of approximately 207 chawls, rehabilitating 15,593 families currently living in cramped, old chawl structures into modern 500 sq ft flats within high-rise buildings. These towers house spacious 2BHK apartments, offering residents a significant improvement in living conditions.

The redevelopment aims to provide durable, high-quality housing with modern amenities such as solar power, rainwater harvesting, automated lighting sensors, and scientific waste management, ensuring the new structures last over 100 years. The flats are designed to be not only homes but "golden investments" that beneficiaries are encouraged to retain to maintain community heritage.

The project is also emphasising women's empowerment by granting them ownership rights and proposing to restrict resale for 10-15 years to preserve the Marathi-speaking community in Mumbai. The entire project is estimated to cost over ₹17,000 crore and represents a critical shift in Mumbai’s urban landscape.

The site will be transformed into a modern urban habitat consisting of 33 high-rise towers with 40 floors each. This redevelopment is aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, setting a national benchmark for community-focused infrastructure development.

The BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project stands as a testament to inclusive urban progress and represents one of India's largest urban renewal efforts. It enhances quality of life, environmental sustainability, and urban infrastructure while preserving cultural identity through planned ownership and resale safeguards.
