Struggling Commutes Ahead: Almost No Trains at Cologne's Central Station due to Infrastructure Upgrade
Difficult commute for passengers: scarcely any train operational at Cologne Main Station - Difficulties for passengers at Cologne Central Station: scarcely any trains operate at midnight
🚧 Challenging times for commuters and rail riders heading to Cologne Central Station 🚧
Gear up for hectic travel in the upcoming weeks, as Cologne Central Station is set to cause headaches for passengers due to an electronic control center upgrade. Starting Friday evening, May 21, at 9 PM, and concluding on Monday, May 19, at 5 AM, restricted train service with possible bus replacements may leave you hitching a ride. Rural and regional traffic will be particularly affected, with ICE Sprinters bound for Bonn and Berlin out of service.
The Cologne–Koblenz line on the Rhine's left bank is completely off-limits, but the tracks on the opposite side remain usable. Cologne lines to Euskirchen and Aachen are also taking a hit. Word on the street is, this is one of the largest station closures in the area.
akers know that we're asking a lot during this period," admits Marcel Winter, head of go.Rheinland, the agency behind local rail traffic.
Expect more than 100 buses to step in for regional trains, impacting six Regional Express lines, six Regionalbahn lines, and numerous S-Bahn connections. These buses will cover an impressive 700,000 kilometers during this timeframe, with their journey starting and ending at Cologne's Central Station, Messe/Deutz, Hansaring, Horrem in Kerpen, Euskirchen, and Bonn Central Station. From Bonn, buses will continue to Koblenz and the Ahr valley.
During this hiatus, workers will complete the finishing work, and test the technology of the new control center "Left Rhine." The second control center, earmarked for completion by the end of 2025, will cost a combined €360 million. Passengers who have endured delay after delay can look forward to smoother rides once the projects are wrapped up. "The new control centers will ensure that trains in the Cologne hub can run more flexibly and less susceptible to disruptions in the future," says the railway.
