Dispute over railway tariffs causes concern for Scheuer about potential limitations on personal mobility freedoms

In the heart of Berlin, the ongoing wage dispute between Deutsche Bahn (DB) and the train drivers' union GDL has raised concerns for travelers across the country. Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) has issued a warning, urging those involved in the dispute to find solutions to prevent travel disruptions.

During the Corona pandemic and lockdown, the railway continued to run, maintaining a vital connection for many. However, Scheuer has emphasised that what the lockdown didn't achieve, should not happen now through a labor dispute.

According to Scheuer, more rail passengers are being seen this Pentecost, a promising sign of recovery for the transportation sector. Yet, the ongoing dispute threatens to disrupt this progress.

The negotiation partners in this controversial discussion include the GDL leadership, formerly Claus Weselsky until 2024, now Mario Reiß, and DB representatives such as Personnel Board member Martin Seiler.

Scheuer has appealed to those responsible to find ways to prevent the ongoing labor dispute from hindering or blocking travel freedom. His concerns were echoed in his comments to "Bild am Sonntag".

The dispute, centred around wages, has not yet brought the railway to a standstill, but the potential for strikes looms large. Despite this, the railway has continued to run, providing a vital service during these challenging times.

As the negotiations continue, the focus remains on finding a resolution that ensures the smooth operation of the railway and maintains travel freedom for all.
