Disrupted Transportation and Protests: Strikes cause demonstrations, rail and airline disruptions in Alsace
France Braces for Massive Protests Across the Country
France is gearing up for a series of demonstrations nationwide, with authorities expecting over 400,000 participants. The protests, set to start in Strasbourg, Mulhouse, and Sélestat at 2 pm, have already caused disruptions across various parts of the country.
In the morning, a large police presence prevented a blockade of the A35 motorway near Strasbourg. The city's airport, Entzheim, was also affected, with two flights to Nice canceled. Similar disruptions were reported at EuroAirport Basel, where between 30 and 40 flights will not depart on Thursday, with an equal number of cancellations for arrivals.
The name of the group organizing the protest demonstration in Sélestat on Friday evening is not publicly available. However, students from various high schools have been active in organizing blockades, which were quickly dispersed by authorities.
The protests are not limited to the streets. Teachers and school cafeteria staff are participating in the strike, causing potential disruptions in the education system. Interestingly, seven out of ten pharmacies in Alsace are closed due to the first protest actions of pharmacists.
French media report around 250 rallies nationwide, indicating a widespread movement of discontent. As the day progresses, it remains to be seen how these demonstrations will unfold and what impact they will have on the country.
