Dixie Fire Devastation Highlights Urgent Need for Old-Growth Forest Conservation

The Dixie Fire, one of California's largest wildfires, left a trail of destruction in 2021. Over 1,300 homes and structures were destroyed, with damages exceeding $1.15 billion. The fire burned for three months, scorching nearly one million acres across five counties. The Biden administration has since reinforced control efforts and invested in mitigation and resilience due to the increasingly destructive wildfire season.

The U.S. West is currently experiencing the most extreme megadrought in at least 1,200 years. This, coupled with extreme heat driven by climate change, led to the Dixie Fire burning out of control. To combat this, the Forest Service is considering new rulemaking focused on climate resilience to update management practices. One key strategy is to improve stewardship and conservation of mature and old-growth forests, which currently make up only 18% of U.S. forests.

Old-growth forests, also known as 'alte Wachstumsforste' or 'Urwälder', are vital in the fight against climate change-driven wildfires. They often have natural fire resistance, high biodiversity, significant carbon storage, and crucial hydrological functions. These factors combined make them robust against disturbances like wildfires and help reduce the risk of large, uncontrollable blazes.

The Dixie Fire's devastation highlights the urgent need for better wildfire management. By investing in the preservation and restoration of old-growth forests, we can enhance our resilience to wildfires and mitigate the impacts of climate change. The Biden administration's efforts to reinforce control measures and promote mitigation and resilience are steps in the right direction.
