Dubai's Emirates Road to be fully restored following extensive renovation spanning over 2 months
Emirates Road Reconstruction Near Completion, Set to Improve Safety and Commuter Experience
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai is nearing the completion of a significant reconstruction and resurfacing project on Emirates Road, one of the city's busiest highways. The project, undertaken primarily to improve road safety, smoothness, and reduce commuter delays, has been underway for the past two months [1][2].
Inspections revealed a drop in the Pavement Quality Index (PQI) to around 85 percent in some sections, below the RTA’s 90 percent target. This deterioration was mainly caused by heavy truck traffic, necessitating the removal and replacement of damaged pavement layers to restore the road’s quality and durability [1][2][3].
The project covers a 14-kilometre stretch of the highway, with stages focused on rebuilding approximately 400 to 500 metres at a time to minimize disruption. Fast lanes were reconstructed by removing 14 cm of old surface and applying multiple new asphalt layers, while slow lanes were resurfaced after removing 8 cm [1][3].
The RTA used AI-powered vehicles with cameras and lasers to precisely detect the damaged areas, ensuring maintenance was targeted and cost-efficient [3]. Once completed, the upgraded Emirates Road is expected to enhance comfort, reduce vehicle wear, lower fuel consumption, and improve safety for commuters traveling towards Sharjah and Abu Dhabi [1][2].
Daily commuters on Emirates Road have experienced delays due to the repair work. Hanan Katib, a resident of Sharjah and a marketing manager in Dubai, has been delayed by at least 30 to 40 minutes, while Reem Al Qaidi, another commuter, has been delayed by nearly 45 minutes [4]. However, both Katib and Al Qaidi agree that the short-term inconvenience will be worth it if the road is smoother and safer after August 25, when all lanes towards Sharjah and Abu Dhabi will be fully open, restoring normal traffic flow and making daily commutes smoother for thousands of drivers [5].
Mattar Al Tayer, the Director-General and Chairman of the RTA, stated that the reconstructed road will improve driving comfort and reduce wear and tear on vehicles. He reiterated his commitment to maintaining Dubai's roads as the safest and most reliable in the world [6]. The repair work on Emirates Road is set to be completed by August 25, ensuring a smoother flow of traffic for the future.
