󰀀 Easing Traffic Woes in Western Bangkok: The Maha Sawat Canal Bridge

❌ No more traffic headaches in the western parts of Bangkok! The Department of Rural Roads (DRR) has officially opened the Maha Sawat Canal Bridge on Ratchaphruek Road, alleviating the relentless traffic jams associated with the new school term and beyond. 🚗

The outbound side of the bridge will open on June 20, putting an end to the decades-long gridlock in the area and offering a much-needed respite for commuters.

Phongkawin Jungrungreangkit, an adviser to the transport minister, shared that the bridge, built by the DRR, tackles congestion at a major chokepoint on Ratchaphruek Road. With peak-hour traffic accounting for up to 120,000 vehicles a day, the bridge promises to expand road capacity, decrease accidents, and enhance the overall commuting experience in western Bangkok.

The Maha Sawat Canal Bridge links Maha Sawat subdistrict in Bang Kruai, Nonthaburi, with Taling Chan district in Bangkok. Construction began in 2022 and was completed sooner than expected, ahead of the initial June 2025 deadline.

Montree Dechasakulsom, the director-general of the DRR, revealed the project's cost: 1.18 billion baht and a length of 3.9 kilometers. The bridge features an 8.5m-wide, two-lane steel structure (one lane in each direction), connected by modern drainage and lighting arrangements. The inbound side measures 2.1km while the outbound side stretches 1.9km.

The necessity for the bridge originated from rapid urbanization and expanding land use in western Nonthaburi along the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River. The existing infrastructure could no longer accommodate the surging volume of vehicles, causing delays and mishaps.

With space constraints preventing traditional road expansion, the DRR wisely designed the bridge to fit within the existing right-of-way. The ultimate goal? Undeterred transportation efficiency and safer, speedier travel for daily commuters.
