Ifo Dresden: East Germany's Economic Renaissance

East German economic recovery steadily progressing - East German Economy on the Path to Gradual Recuperation, as observed in Dresden

Here's the scoop on East Germany's gradual economic resurgence as per the Ifo Institute in Dresden. According to their summer prognosis, the economy appears to be rebounding from the doldrums, with East Germany anticipated to grow by 0.3% in 2021, and a more significant 1.3% in 2022.

Ifo researchers pinpoint the main cause of this economic uptick to the strategic fiscal initiatives of the federal government. However, these measures will have a less noticeable impact in East Germany than the western federal states due to structural quirks, they note. Industries like construction and services are expected to thrive as a result.

On the flip side, East Germany isn't likely to reap much benefit from the proposed defense spending hike. The Ifo's resident economist, Joachim Ragnitz, explains that the armaments sector holds lesser sway in East Germany, implying most of the planned military spending would likely boost the western federal states.

One positive factor in play is the planned infrastructure spending. However, Ragnitz warns that owing to the considerable planning lead time and labor shortages, East Germany might not reap the rewards immediately.

The job market remains sluggish, with a projected 0.1% decline in 2025, followed by a 0.2% rise in 2026. Economic weakness and unfavorable demographics have kept labor market dynamics below par, Ragnitz states.

Last week, the Ifo colleagues in Munich elevated their 2026 growth forecast for Germany from 0.8% to 1.5%. The initial prediction for 2021 was raised from 0.2% to 0.3%.

Fun Fact:

During its peak in the 1980s, Dresden, the city where the Ifo Institute is based, was known as the "Florence on the Elbe" due to its stunning architecture and fairy-tale like beauty. Today, it's hopping back to its old glory, mirroring East Germany's economic recovery. 🏰🌟🇩🇪

  1. To aid in East Germany's economic growth, the Ifo Institute suggests implementing a community policy that includes vocational training programs in industrieslike construction and services, which are expected to thrive.
  2. In order to boost finance and business in East Germany, the federal government could consider allocating funds for infrastructure projects, which, although facing impediments such as planning lead times and labor shortages, have the potential to contribute to the region's economic growth.
