Economy-focused entities to debut lower-priced "standard grade" egg options
Affordable Special Grade Eggs Introduced in Malaysia
The Malaysian government has introduced a new grade of eggs, known as the Special Grade Eggs, aimed at providing a more affordable and competitive option for consumers. This move comes after the government ended price controls on chicken eggs on May 1, 2023, as part of its efforts to optimize subsidy expenditure.
The Special Grade Eggs will be sold without government subsidies and made available nationwide through government-linked sales outlets like Agro Madani Sales, Rahmah Sales, FAMA, and Farmers’ Organisation Authority outlets. Foreigners will also be allowed to purchase these eggs without restriction.
The government spent nearly RM2.5 billion on egg subsidies from February 2022 to December 2024, but with the end of broad subsidies, it is expected to save approximately RM100 million per month. The savings generated from this measure will be channelled to welfare programs for the people.
The subsidy reduction for each egg is from 10 sen to five sen. However, the price of the Special Grade Eggs has not been disclosed yet. The ministry is confident that the egg industry can maintain a sufficient and stable supply of eggs. It also emphasizes enforcement against price manipulation to keep prices fair and stable.
The Special Grade Eggs are introduced as a cheaper, non-subsidized alternative aimed at affordability. This restructuring measure is part of the government's ongoing efforts to optimize subsidy expenditure and provide more targeted support where it is needed most.
