Electric train batteries fail to power all residents in Kinzigtal
In the picturesque Black Forest region of Baden-Württemberg, a significant change is underway on the railway line between Offenburg and Freudenstadt. SWEG, a state-owned operating company, has introduced hybrid trains since December 2024, aiming for an emissions-free operation. However, the introduction of these hybrid trains has caused a stir, particularly at the stations of Loßburg-Rodt and Schenkenzell in the Rottweil district.
The hybrid trains draw their energy via classic power collectors or an onboard battery, making them a promising solution for the dilapidated rail network in the region. The battery-powered train is successfully navigating the challenging route between Hausach and Freudenstadt without a stop. However, the lack of electrification on the stretch between Hausach and Freudstadt is significant, and the omission of train stops at Loßburg-Rodt and Schenkenzell has raised concerns among local politicians and residents.
The FDP and SPD state parliamentarians have expressed their concerns about the cancellation of train stops in Schenkenzell, and the independent mayor of Schenkenzell, Bernd Heinzelmann, is particularly upset about the situation. The stations can only be reached by rail with replacement bus service, according to SWEG. The Green Minister of Transport, Hermann, is also facing criticism for the need to use diesel buses in the electric train trial on the secondary line.
The timetable needs to be changed to serve the two omitted locations, according to the FDP and SPD state parliamentarians. Passengers on long-distance trains experienced similar issues in the spring, with their train regularly departing from Esslingen instead of Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof, due to the S-21 construction site.
Despite the concerns, SWEG remains enthusiastic about the hybrid trains. The introduction of these trains is important for the railway line between Offenburg and Freudenstadt, as they represent a step towards a more sustainable future for regional transport.

As of August 2025, no specific updates have been found regarding service modifications at these stations. However, it is crucial to remain vigilant and stay informed about any changes that may affect these rural communities in the Kinzigtal region.
